People have been encouraged to vote for Bangkok in Manchester City Football Club's fund distribution campaign to develop sport and recreational areas for youth.

Bangkok is among six cities from around the world competing in the famous football club's Cityzens Giving campaign this year. The campaign offers funding for projects founded by young leaders, with a focus on the development of safe urban recreational space.

It also seeks to leverage the power of football to tackle local social problems.

The city with the most votes will receive £400,000 (17.6 million baht) to fund their projects.

The other five cities selected in this year's campaign are Manchester, New York City, Los Angeles, Melbourne and Guangzhou.

Government spokesman Sansern Keawkamnerd said that Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has praised Bangkok as a strong contender in the pack.

Lt Gen Sansern noted the selection of Bangkok originated in a collaboration between the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Right To Play Foundation that led to the Not Just for Kicks project. The project uses football as a tool to develop young people's potential.

The prime minister has urged people to vote for Bangkok on the online voting system.

By Saturday, Manchester and Melbourne had received around 11,000 votes, followed by New York and Guangzhou at 9,300 votes, Bangkok on 4,700 votes and Los Angeles trailing with 3,800 votes.

Voting is available at https://cityzensgiving.org/manchester and will end in 23 days.

In this year's project, Manchester plans to provide weekly football training sessions for girls at new fields across the city. New York plans to create access to free after-school and summer soccer programmes and festivals.

Melbourne has set out to offer more inclusive recreational spaces where youth can go play sports and make friends, while Los Angeles has proposed the rehabilitation of a field east in the city and the development of a programme focused on health and nutrition.

Guangzhou plans to deliver soccer programmes for children, including those with disabilities, while Bangkok seeks to renovate old recreational sites to create spaces where young people can go to learn about important life skills to keep them way from gangs and crime.

Nearly 400,000 votes were cast in last year's campaign. Manchester City football group and its partners Cityzens Giving saw a total of £1.5 million in donations for funding.

Mexico City was the campaign winner last year.
