The Thai team arrived in Shanghai yesterday for the AFC U23 Championship, which kicks off next week.

Under coach Zoran Jankovic, Thailand have had unconvincing results in their preparations for the Jan 9-20 tournament.

In the Bulgarian's first assignment as coach of the Thai U23 side, the War Elephants finished fourth in the six-team M-150 Cup warm-up event in Buri Ram last month.

They also had poor results against Thai League 1 clubs.

Jankovic is assistant to Milovan Rajevac, coach of the senior national team, and the Serb will be on hand to advice him during Thailand's last warm-up game against Australia on Saturday.

"Milovan will come and help the team in coaching and other things," Jankovic said.

"It will be a difficult game but we will do our best."

Jankovic earlier told the media that the team's poor results were a result of the absence of a lot of key players but he said yesterday this would not be used as an excuse if the team do not fare well in China.

He said the team had been training for a month so they should be ready for the tournament.

As for the Australia game, he plans to use a different set of players for each half.

The cold weather in China could affect his players, said the Bulgarian.

"The weather in China now is about five to six degrees [Celsius]. I am a European, who used to be a player and a coach in China, but still feel cold. It is important for our players to quickly adapt themselves to the weather here," he said.

Thailand midfielder Supachok Sarachart said: "I will try to do my best in every game. We are ready for the tournament. I am a bit nervous but I think I can cope with the pressure as I have experience of playing for my club, Buriram United."

Thailand are grouped with Japan, North Korea and Palestine.

The Thais stunned Japan in their opening game at the M-150 Cup but then lost to North Korea in the next match.

Jankovic's men were defeated by Southeast Asian rivals Vietnam in the third-place play-off.

In China, Thailand will be looking to better their performance at Qatar 2016 where they were eliminated in the group stage, despite beginning positively with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against 2014 finalists Saudi Arabia.

Title-holders Japan will look to retain the title they won in Qatar two years ago when their come-from-behind 3-2 victory over South Korea saw the young Blue Samurai crowned champions.
