Football Association of Thailand president Somyot Poompunmuang said on Tuesday Totchtawan Sripan could one day become coach of the national team.

Totchtawan quit as coach of SCG Muang Thong United after the Kirins suffered an embarrassing 6-1 loss at promoted club PT Prachuap in the Thai League 1 on Sunday.

Muang Thong bosses wanted Tochtawan to stay on as coach but the former Thailand midfielder stood firm in his decision to part ways with the Kirins.

"It's normal for coaches to leave clubs. However, I have talked to some Muang Thong executives who said it's a pity that Totchtawan wanted to leave the club,'' Somyot said.

He said he also had talked to FAT technical chief Witthaya Laohakul who said Totchtawan was the right person to coach the national team in the future.

"He is good enough to coach the national team. He also has a pro licence," Somyot said.

However, the FAT chief admitted that it was difficult for Totchtawan to coach the national team in the near future since current national team boss Molovan Rajevac has been doing a good job.

The Serb, who began his stint in Thailand in May last year, signed a new two-year contract recently.

Somyot said the FAT may give Totchtawan some kind of a role in the national team. "Totchtawan may work with the national team in a certain capacity. If and when the right time comes, he may become the national team coach,'' he said.

Totchtawan steered the Kirins to the Thai League 1 title in his first season at Muang Thong last year and claimed the League Cup last year.

Muang Thong have had a stuttering start to the season and are currently 10th in the top flight with two wins, one draw and two defeats.

Totchtawan became the third coach in the Thai League 1 to leave this year after Drago Mamic (Chainat) and Christian Zeige (Ratchaburi).

Following his resignation, it was reported that more than 20 coaches from around the world inquired about the job at Muang Thong.
