Thais Wanheng and Srisaket share honours

Thai fighters Wanheng Menayothin and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai shared the WBC Asian Boxing Council's boxer of the year award for 2018.

They were honoured at the annual WBC Asian Boxing Council awards event in Bangkok recently.

WBC minimumweight champion Wanheng made three successful title defences last year, while Srisaket defended the WBC super-flyweight title twice in 2018.

Srisaket lost the crown to Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada last month.

Thailand-based companies, Nakornloung Promotion and Diamond Promotion, shared the promoter of the year award.

Former WBC light-flyweight champion Suriyan Satorn won the fight of the year award, alongside his Thai compatriot Siridech Deebook, for their pulsating encounter which took place back in March of 2018.

The awards event was held in conjunction with the annual World Boxing Council Muaythai global awards event, where a host of elite Muaythai world champions received their accolades.

Belgium's Youssef Boughanem was crowned male fighter of the year, while Australia's Alma Juniku got the female fighter award.

English fighter Ruth Ashdown and Thailand's Sirisompa Sirisak shared the fight of the year award.

Thailand's Saenchai PK Saenchaigym was presented with the global ambassador award.

The event was presided over by Pol Gen Kovid Bhakdibhumi, president of the WBC Asian Boxing Council, also known as WBC Asia.

Kovid is also a vice-president of the World Boxing Council.

The event attracted a large number of boxing promoters, fighters and fans who converged on Bangkok from across Asia and beyond.
