Respect for Prem

Re: "Gen Prem leaves rich legacy", (Editorial, May 27). With great sadness we learn of the passing of Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, in my humble opinion, the statesman of the 20th century, a great soldier, a great peacemaker and a great communicator in difficult times, a reconciler who again united the nation and kingdom from its turmoil with communism.

Gen Prem brought back peace and unity and rebuilt the economic house of Thailand. He is the one, without any outside interests, who built a strong and solid foundation and a house properly decorated and furnished.

I still remember when many members of my staff were happy to see then PM Prem leave his post. My warning was timely when I told them that they do not know what they wish for. From there on it was "down the slope", one after the other prime ministers starting to dismantle what PM Prem had constructed, taking off the roof, selling the furniture, selling the honour and dignity of their country and so forth and with the man in Dubai selling the remainder of the house and its foundation.

It's like in France with Charles de Gaulle, when the French citizens failed to fully support him. Well, with his dignity intact, he resigned. Gen Prem did the same, with his dignity preserved, as well as the unity of the country.

Unlike other some foreigners in the country, I think it is not proper for me to criticise my host, I am a guest in this still relatively free country, certainly freer than the tormented and "politically correct" Europe -- RIP Christian civilisation.

World of cover-ups

Re: "Trump's cover blown", (PostBag, May 29).

President Trump may be the "king of cover-ups", but show me a world leader who isn't. With some, the cover-ups do not come for years after they leave office. Lots of mass graves, dead bodies, disappearances, and embezzlement. Some are caught on the spot, others later, but it all comes out eventually.

One of the best remembered cover-ups was the discovery of the Polish officers murdered by Stalin in Katyn, known as the Katyn Massacre. Pol Pot's massacres were revealed after the war. How many other cover-ups are as yet undiscovered, or will ever be?

Mr Trump's attempted cover-ups are whispers in the wind by comparison. If Samanea Saman digs deep enough, I'm sure unpleasant Thai cover-ups will be revealed.

Double standards

Regarding the never-ending saga of tearing down the Aetas property on the corner of Ruamrudee and Ruamrudee 2, there is a building about 50 metres off Sarasin Road under construction that must be close to 40 storeys.

It allows far less access located on much smaller bordering sois than Ruamrudee 2 on all sides.

Why is this not an issue for the local government when this far taller building is allowed?

Crossword gets wild

Even the Life section of Bangkok Post is getting political nowadays. One of the clues in Monday's cryptic crossword reads "Officials in charge of a wild jaunt (5 letters)".

No prizes for solving that one.
