History will judge

Re: "Thanathorn cops rally charges", (BP, Dec 23).

As far as I remember Suthep Thaugsuban was never charged with anything. I do not think he had police permission to occupy Bangkok for half a year. And police also did not charge Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha for breaking the highest law in the country.

The double standards in Thailand are definitely without bounds.

But one day there will be a reckoning. This is what history teaches us.

Heartless politicking

Between the Post and my wife, I learned about the high price of tampons last week, and I hope the government did too.

Instead of wasting their time trying to score cheap political points against the opposition, I hope the government will use this opportunity to score some compassion points by doing something to help relieve the economic burden of the many poor girls and women who need to use them.

Who knows, if you are lucky, some of you in this government may even come back as women next time.

Now ban free straws

I went to 7-Eleven the other day and heard that from Jan 1 they will not give out plastic bags. Congratulations.

But the same ban would be nice for straws also. Last week my family and I collected three garbage bags full of discarded straws from Hat Sai Noi beach.

No English needed

Students at a university in Chiang Mai are grumbling that they have to learn at least 550 English words to be eligible for enrollment in courses there. No, they shouldn't have to learn English, but they also shouldn't complain when they apply for, and are denied, good jobs with companies both local and international that require some English competence for their businesses.

Of course the honourable jobs of street food vendors, motorcycle repairmen, garbage collectors, sewer conduit cleaners and work in recycle depots pay quite well as an alternative. No English needed -- and in some cases, little Thai. Why bother to invest in university courses? Better to save time and take the shortcut. Several of my Thai friends have opened successful businesses in my town, and have very good English proficiency. They are attracting foreigners, earning far more money than their counterparts in the same businesses without any language skills other than Thai.

Most of these grumbling students were probably never boy scouts, and never learned the motto, "Be prepared".

Grumble-Grumble

River volume too high

The Iconsiam shuttle boat goes back and forth from Iconsiam to Saphan Taksin pier every day from morning to late afternoon. The shuttle is so noisy that, when added to the noise of the long-tail boats, the atmosphere on the river becomes intolerable.

For the sake of its image and reputation, Iconsiam should replace this noisy old tub with a new, silent boat.

The climate roadblock

Magical solutions for global warming are not necessary.

The science and technology needed to replace fossil fuels with carbon-free energy is already developed. And financing this profitable enterprise is not a problem. However, the recent Madrid climate talks demonstrated the willingness of conservative politicians to imperil our future to defend the status quo.
