Cannabis fairy tales
Re: “Pharmacist group takes aim at weed”, (BP, July 30).
The advocates of decriminalising cannabis “for medical purposes only” are either exceedingly naïve or are purposefully practising grand obfuscation by now claiming they are against the recreational use of marijuana.
Perhaps, while they are at it, these same fairy-tale spinners could encourage all would-be recreational users of cannabis to simply follow the example of former US president Bill Clinton who claimed he smoked pot, but didn’t inhale!

Military track record
Re: “Air force insists on jet cash”, (BP, Aug 1).
“Don’t mix politics with security issues as this will not benefit the country,” opines Air Chief Marshal Napadej Dhupatemiya as he seeks to justify a huge chunk of taxpayer money upfront for a proposed aircraft purchase which has not even yet been approved by the US Congress.
How hollow his words ring coming from a senior commander in Thailand’s military establishment which has, for nine decades, relentlessly and often brutally, subverted and undermined the country’s political development by way of endless military coups.

Civilians in war zone
Re: “Harm’s way”, (PostBag, Aug 8).
So Miro King thinks the Ukrainians are the ones putting civilian lives at risk. That’s enlightening because I thought it was Russian bombing that was doing that. Perhaps Miro King would do well to remember who launched this illegal invasion and attempted land grab, and who is actually bombing civilian areas, regardless of whether there are troops in them. Russia is committing criminal atrocities against civilians. That should be the focus of everyone’s anger.

How Russia operates
Re: “Harm’s way”, (PostBag, Aug 8).
Miro King is quite correct that Ukraine has been totally reckless in building cities and infrastructure in the path of the Russian invasion, putting their population at great risk. When Russia flattens these cities to liberate them, which is the way the Russians operate, this puts the population at great risk. You can see the great lengths that Russia has gone to only target troops when you look at pictures of the towns they have liberated, like Mariupol. Or perhaps not.

Humble beauty
Re: “Pageant winner seen as ‘pride of city’”, (BP, Aug 4).
Heartiest congratulations to Miss Universe Thailand Anna and her very proud parents — and let’s not forget the nun who helped raise her when her parents were making Bangkok a cleaner city for you and me! They are inspirations and role models for all of us, and proof positive that even those of humble origins can reach the stars.

American dreams
Re: “Teledummies”, (PostBag, July 31).
My thanks to Felix Qui for saving me the time to respond to Jason A Jellison erroneously lauding the truthfulness of Fox News broadcasts; how can anyone be that misguided and ill-informed? However, Felix Qui’s hope that similar Americans “soon wake from their Fox News nightmares” is overly-optimistic due to their tired adherence to the notion of the “American dream”. The rest of the world tends not to live in the world of such dreams or, for that matter, nightmares, as they tend to be more awake, and aware.
