High bus hopes

Re: "BMTA plans to get 3,200 electric buses," (BP, Aug 16).

Great news that the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) will finally be adding a significant number of electric buses to its fleet. The shift to electric buses will go a long way towards reducing the chronic air pollution in Bangkok.

Let's just hope that there's no monkey business this time, as in the past, that ends up derailing the purchase and deployment of the buses.

No white knight

Re: "Tragedy, farce in Mountain B saga," (Opinion, Aug 15).

We Thais give lip service to fighting corruption, and wait for a "white knight", a "khon dee", to lead us out of this morass. But there's no white knight. For example, PM Prayut grabbed power eight long years ago, saying that we desperately needed reform -- and claiming to be The One we needed. But now his own administration is nose-deep in corruption.

To rid us of the rampant corruption which steals from each of us, you and I must be more politically aware, and active. Report corruption to the media. When a corrupt politician appears in public, turn your back on him. Sign petitions posted on change.org. Keep asking Prayut when he's going to release ex-NACC commissioner Vicha Mahakun's report on corruption in the police and public prosecutor's office.

Short on ideas

Re: "Battlefield decider," (PostBag, Aug 15) and "Is anyone going to win the Russian embargo game?" (Opinion, Aug 13).

Although I agree with Kuldeep Nagi that we are living in perilous times, I don't clearly see how the Soviet and American invasions and occupations of Afghanistan are relevant to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Afghanistan invasions lasted a matter of days and the remainder of the conflict was an insurgency against occupying forces. Sanctions did not really play a role. Krugman was pointing out how they have not been as effective as hoped, except in restricting Russia's imports of electronic components needed for their most advanced weaponry.

What is conspicuous in its absence is that Mr Nagi does not express any explicit alternative to the present bellicose state affairs in the Ukraine. Is he implicitly suggesting that Ukraine submit to Russian domination? Is he expressing his own personal cri de coeur? Frustration? Not knowing what is to be done?

More boilerplate

Re: "China mate," (PostBag, Aug 13).

Fleetingly one hoped ML Sakiri Kridakorn might have something interesting to say about China's global intentions but it didn't take long for the CCP speak to emerge.

May one ask for a little more detail about the "false rhetoric on Xinjiang genocides?"

My own proposal, admittedly Western hegemony-influenced, would be to ask the citizens of Taiwan, Hong Kong and even Xinjiang, how they feel about living under the CCPs "world class" vision.

Down with meat

Re: "One Man's Meat," (PostBag, Aug 14).

While there is overwhelming evidence about the link between eating meat and heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and so on, Miro King gives no evidence that lab-grown meat is dangerous. Besides, there are "meat" alternatives to that alternative.

For example, tofu, which has protein and "real calories" without the excessive cholesterol and saturated fat found in meat, can be flavoured to taste exactly like beef or chicken.

King shows zero concern for the animal suffering and environmental destruction (especially in regard to climate change) that his diet causes.

Is King the kind of human being that meat-eaters want to be like? May God help us if the answer is yes.

Down with vaccines

A majority of people have been vaccinated and it is understandable that they do not want to believe these figures.

However, the adverse events are long term and the side effects could be repeated Covid infections, autoimmune diseases, increased susceptibility to HIV, and problems with the cardiovascular system (myocarditis), reproductive system, and respiratory system, among others.

As Covid vaccines are proven to be not effective in preventing, treating, or curing Covid, more recent peer reviewed studies demonstrate the effectiveness of vitamin D3 and Ivermectin in treatment and prophylaxis for Covid.

They should be embraced by public health officials where necessary in establishing a new public health policy for Covid. Public health should not build policy based upon wealth for a few but health for all.
