Relocate 'Bua Noi'

Re: " 'Bua Noi' may finally make ape escape", (BP, Oct 22), and "Give 'Boi Noi' a better home", (Editorial, Oct 25).

I find all the chatter about repatriating "Bua Noi" to the zoo in Germany where she was born to be somewhat naïve. Has anyone bothered to enquire with the zoo officials in Germany if they would indeed be willing to accept the ageing gorilla? I have doubts that any zoo would be very keen to take on the extra costs and hassles of caring for such an animal in the twilight of life. Besides the expenditures for providing healthy food and an appropriate living environment, there will likely be very costly veterinarian bills on the horizon as the beleaguered animal ages further. All this for an animal that is sure to become less of a "draw" for visitors with each passing day as it reaches old age.

A better solution -- should it be possible to work out -- would be to relocate Bua Noi to a safer, more natural habitat within Thailand.

No animal rights

Re: "Gorilla in Alcatraz", (PostBag, Oct 24).

While the most heinous criminals in prison have rights (at least in some countries) an innocent gorilla can be locked up forever in prison euphemistically called a zoo with no rights. We need to ask ourselves why other than narcissism, what the justification is for believing that only our species is entitled to moral consideration.

Shameful record

Re: "Why Thailand abstained in UNGA vote", (Opinion, Oct 25).

After patiently studying Khun Kavi's 10 (supporting) reasons why Thailand "abstained" in UNGA's resolution of Oct 13 condemning Russia's annexation of Ukraine's four eastern regions, my simple question is: Was it then a wrong decision for Thailand to join 141 countries in "supporting" UNGA's resolution last March condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine?

Whether the answer is yes or no, Thailand's shameful voting record by "abstaining" on territorial annexation of another country will remain a "black" spot in our diplomatic history. As I stated in my earlier letter, "this abstention is like slapping one's own face".

Red Bull questions

Re: "Red Bull bag constructors' title", (Sports, Oct 25).

Last weekend the founder of Red Bull, Dietrich Mateschitz died, aged 78, after a long illness with cancer. The funeral will be in Austria. Will the one with the red notice go to represent the family? If not him will anyone from his Thai partners go?

Whether you like the drink or not, Mr Mateschitz made an amazing global business and supported thousands of sportspersons. His nickname used by all was Didi. Wonder where that nickname came from. Not a peep from the Bangkok Post. Why is that?

Country waking up

Re: "Halloween returns to Khao San Road", (BP, Oct 25).

This is the second article in the Post recently about the coming Halloween holiday celebrations. It's great that the country is waking up to the upcoming holiday it has been missing for the past two years. Glad to hear about all who will be joining me in celebrating my birthday on Monday.
