Expose the culprits

Re: "App won't end pollution", (Editorial, April 18).

Regarding the timely editorial on pollution in Na Phra Lan district of Saraburi and the Ministry of Health's new app, I appreciate the editorial desk coming up with statistics for the last 20 years.

The inactivity of 20 years shows how deep the corruption levels are between government agencies and the so-called corporate world. Imagine the money allocated and spent to carry out the research studies and the collecting of data with taxpayers' money.

Please also name the local senator of that particular area who was supposed to raise the issue in parliament and press agencies to take action against those powerful companies with local muscle power, which is totally absent.

We can understand the magnitude of understanding between them.

The locals should boycott the current senator who maintains a bind eye to these corrupt violators. Local police are also equally responsible for these crimes.

I do think a one-day editorial is not enough.

We need the Bangkok Post and other mainstream media to carry out consistent investigative journalism and expose the culprits and bring them to court with a long prison term and hundreds of millions of baht in cash compensation to the government and locals.

Leave plants alone

Re: "It's a balancing act", (PostBag, April 15).

I respect and share Mr Bahrt's sincere sorrow. Eating sentient animal life forms to survive is shameful and tragic. A curse. However, I don't share Eric's guilt-avoiding, delusional belief that eating plants instead is somehow ok. Plants are sentient life forms too. All life forms fear death, as Darwin noted, and therefore struggle to live.

Mr Bahrt, is it less shameful, therefore, to sacrifice living plants to serve your eating needs? Veggies are "life" too. Morally, eating plants is arguably more reprehensible than dining on fellow murderous animals. Plants peacefully evolved to survive harmlessly on sunshine via photosynthesis. They wish no culinary harm to other life forms, especially animals like us. Us animals evolved much later to survive by killing and eating our own kind and innocent plants, too! Declaring vegetarianism is to embrace the ravenous mark of Cain that genetically brand all of us animals, especially those who even eat blameless living plants. Mr Bahrt, buck up! Please do not now commit suicide in penance for your veggie-eating sins. I already have enough cursed guilt, being on top of this cannibalistic, life-eating food chain, without your death on my conscious too.

Enforce road rules

Re: "Songkran road accidents top 2,000", (BP, April 17).

I write as an aged man in Thailand with a compassionate approach to death and casualties. Namely, the family left with such distress. No need to mention how extended that may be. I'm ignoring the, in many cases, financial effect. Please enforce the road rules 365 days a day and educate people from a young age about all matters of care.

Warrior monks

Re: "More than 25,000 men volunteer for military service", (BP, April 17).

Voluntary enlistment is diverse, with monks [among them]. This reassures me that the ancient tradition of warrior monks is being revived to protect our frontiers. They will watch over their intellectual comrades and keep in check fifth-column difficulties. But their duty may be impeded by the time needed to polish the boots of their superiors.
