Moral stock options

Re: "Thai stock index remains low amid foreign sell-off", (Business, June 24).

Institutional investors rarely invest in Thai smaller or mid-cap companies as they must be razor-focused on shares with a high average daily trading liquidity; this is only so due to the size of their managed big portfolios. Hence smaller and mid-size stocks are of little interest to them.

As such it's not in their interest to research or know much about these. Nor do the many day-traders here as they focus as well mostly on large-cap companies.

This has been the reality for many years.

Yet there are many smaller/mid-sized Thai stocks which are neglected, undervalued, and pay high dividends, while growing and reputable. While there are always exceptions, I call them the "moral" majority.

Is the activist OK?

Re: "Teen activist presses school to take her in", (BP, June 20).

I believe this 15-year-old girl Yok has some kind of personality problem. So pitiful.

Does "freedom of expression" and "democracy" mean there are no rules and guidelines?

Just wondering why her parents aren't stopping her, or are they egging her on?

Hello, Move Forward Party? Aren't you going to explain to this girl, since you all are so good at democracy and freedom of expression?

God is with Pita

Re: "Godspeed, Pita", (PostBag, June 16).

Having read Vint Chavala's prayer for (who should be the prime minister-elect) Pita Limjaroenrat, including the words "I wish that God be with [Mr Limjaroenrat]", I was struck by a stunning hymn performed by the German Gregorian-style music group known as Masters of Chant.

I would like to reply that, while I rarely speak about my Theravada Buddhist faith, and while that song might be harking from my initial Christian upbringing, I would like to add that I recognise that God is already with this nice young man who rocked all of Asia by winning an election which was seemingly out of his reach.

Whether Mr Pita is ready or not, he clearly represents the will of a new generation and holds their hopes and dreams in his hands.

I believe the fact that Pita won this election was neither an accident, nor because of some old media shares in a TV station which went off the air 15 years ago; I believe it was God's will.

To the writer I propose, you already have your wish, and "if we wanna see God", well, sometimes you "gotta move on the other side."

Prosecute the corrupt

Re: "People with different opinions", (InQuote, June 21).

I agreed with Dr Tossaporn Serirak, recently-elected MP from the Pheu Thai Party which is pushing for amnesty bills, that "people with different political opinions should not be prosecuted".

I also agree that people who committed crimes such as corruption, blocking traffic, defacing public property, closing airports and so on should be prosecuted.

Wrath of mother nature

Re: "Climate folly", (PostBag, June 17).

Once again PostBag is allowing one of our resident storytellers to grace us with their latest theory, Michael Setter's newest being: "The Earth is intelligent and responds intelligently to everything."

I heard desertification, degradation and deforestation continue apace, and with man-made C02 being pumped into the atmosphere at an increasing rate. The effects of climate change will only get worse.

Unless of course "the Earth" has made the decision that cooking, starving or drowning us off the planet is the best solution to its problems.

Most abused animal

Re: "US approves lab-grown chicken for sale", (BP, June 22).

It was encouraging to read that lab-grown chicken has been approved for sale in the USA.

If lab-grown chickens ever replace factory-farmed chickens it will spare billions of chickens from terrible suffering. Even the USDA, which represents the interests of the agriculture industry, admitted that about one million turkeys and chickens are boiled alive in scalding water every year.

And that doesn't take into consideration the horrible way the birds suffer on the factory farms. Also because of the unsanitary conditions in which these chickens are raised, eating factory-farmed chickens is extremely unhealthy. Chickens may very well be the most abused animals on earth.
