The Phi Ta Khon ghost festival is held in Dan Sai district in Loei province each year to honour the return of the Buddha-to-be, Prince Vessandorn, after he left his village on a long journey. According to local belief, villagers were celebrating his return so loud that they awoke the ghosts who joined in the now four-century-old festival. Each year, people taking part in the festival wear colourful ghost-like attire and masks, as tourists stop by to enjoy the occasion. - Thiti Wannamontha
