While Kanyalak Preedasuttijit had a stroll to the women's title, Witchayanon Chothiranrungrueang had to fend off a spirited challenge to claim the men's top prize at the Thailand Amateur Open yesterday.

The Udon Thani-born Witchayanon carded a three-under-par 69 in the fourth round for a 15-under 273 total and two-stroke victory over Sadom Kaewkanjana (69) at Bangkok's Panya Indra Golf Club.

The 19-year-old Witchayanon had three birdies in a bogey-free round yesterday to keep second-placed Sadom at an arm's length.

Witchayanon, who took home the Rama VII trophy, said everything went as planned and he gave himself many opportunities to score birdies.

"I did well but to win on 15 under was beyond my expectations," said Witchayanon.

"This win is for my parents."

Witchayanon will now join the Thai national team, which will be defending their Putra Cup title in Singapore next month.

Malaysia's Daeng Abdul Rahman (70) and Singapore's Gregory Foo (68) finished joint third on 277.

Tanapat Pichaikool (72) was fifth on 279, while Natthaphat Hangchokchaisakul (69) and Runchanaphong Youprayong (72) finished tied for sixth.

The Thailand Amateur Open is the country's oldest amateur golf competition. Its previous winners include Boonchu Ruangkit, Thaworn Wiratchant, Thammanoon Srirot, Prayad Marksaeng, Thongchai Jaidee and Prom Meesawat.

In the women's event, Kanyalak stormed to her second title in the prestigious event despite a lacklustre final round.

Holding an eight-stroke advantage after three rounds, Kanyalak posted a final-round 73 to win by five shots on five-under 283.

Kanyalak, who also won here in 2014, said she had putting problems but still managed to finish as the winner.

"I am happy that I was able to win despite struggling a bit," said the 18-year-old Kanyalak. "I made three birdies and four bogeys in this round."

Atthaya Thitikul (68) was second on even-par 288, while Virunphat Orankitkulchai (74) came in third on 293.

Kanyalak received the trophy from Rangsrid Luxitanon, president of the Thailand Golf Association.

Thepbadin Amaranan captured a one-stroke lead following his second-round 65 at the All Thailand Premier Championship 2016 in Khon Kaen.

Thepbadin from Chiang Rai had eight birdies against a lone bogey on 16th for a 65 yesterday. He stayed atop on 11-under 133 at the par-72 Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club.

Amateur Akedanai Ponghathaikul was second on 10-under 134 after carding a 66, while overnight leader Atthaphon Sriboonkaew (69) dropped to third on nine under.

Pawin Ingkhapradit fired a 68 with five birdies and one bogey for a total of six-under 138 to share fourth spot with Apisit Nimnual (70) and amateur Kammalas Namuangrak (66).

Veteran Thaworn Wiratchant mixed three birdies with an equal number of bogeys for a 72 and was tied for 18th on two under.

The cut was made at 146 with 60 players qualifying for the weekend rounds.

In the 54-hole women's event, Saranporn Langkulgasettrin fired a 68 to take a two-shot lead into the final round.

Saraporn yesterday had five birdies and one bogey for an eight-under 136, two shots ahead of amateur Onkanok Soisuwan (69).

Kusuma Meechai (71) was third on 139, while Preenaphan Poomklay (69) was two strokes further below on 141.
