Kuala Lumpur: Thailand lost to Myanmar in the final of chinlone event 2 last night.

Myanmar proved too strong in their own sport which is similar to sepak takraw beating the Thais 317-303 in the gold medal match.

Earlier, Malaysia won the first gold medal of the 29th SEA Games after beating the Philippines in the final of chinlone event 3 which featured only three nations.

In the first round of the final, the Malaysians amassed 197 points against 133 by the Filipinos whilst in the crucial second round the score favoured the hosts 194-138.

Indonesia claimed two golds in archery to lead the medal race. The Games officially begin on Saturday.

Also yesterday, flags of the 11 nations competing in the Games were hoisted in a colourful ceremony near the entrance of the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil.

The participating countries are Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, Brunei, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Timor Leste.

Meanwhile, Malaysia's sports minister admitted yesterday there were "glitches" with preparations for the SEA Games after a report said a key venue was not ready and fans had trouble getting into a football game.

The Malay Mail reported that the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre needed a lot of work as it was only handed over to organisers two days ago, while spectators faced problems getting into Monday's Malaysia v Brunei match.

"There are some glitches here and there, we are taking care of that now," Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin told reporters, adding that overall the picture was "so far so good".

Khairy, who himself will compete in polo at the multi-sport event, earlier offered assurances that all venues for the Aug 19-30 games would be ready on time despite the problems, the Malay Mail reported.

Events taking place at the convention centre include judo, karate, taekwondo and snooker.

Large crowds flocked to watch the Malaysia v Brunei game on Monday, which Malaysia won 2-1, but some fans with tickets could get in, with media reports blaming poor organisation.
