LONDON: Relegation-threatened West Ham United struck early and held on for a 1-0 victory over title-chasers Chelsea in an entertaining Premier League match at London Stadium on Saturday.

West Ham started brightly and took the lead on six minutes when Marko Arnautovic guided the ball into the far corner after a neat exchange of passes on the edge of the area.

Chelsea dominated possession as they searched for an equaliser but Hammers' keeper Adrian saved from N'Golo Kante and Davide Zappacosta in the first half, while Alvaro Morata and Eden Hazard missed good chances late on.

Despite the victory, West Ham are not yet out of the drop zone. They are tied on points with West Brom but the latter enjoy a big goal difference. Chelsea, meanwhile, squandered a chance to pull level with Manchester United, who will host a crucial derby match against leaders Manchester City late Sunday.

The Hammers entered Saturday's contest on their worst run since December 2015, with only three draws to show for their last eight Premier League matches.

It is noteworthy, though, that West Ham skipper David Moyes, with different clubs, has now won five of his last six home matches in the League against reigning champions.
