Thai stars want fans to make season finales special

Thai players hope to be spurred on by home supporters during next month's season-ending tournaments in Bangkok.

The Thai fans will be in a unique position to enjoy live stadium viewing of three top-class badminton tournaments in three successive weeks when the season resumes at Muang Thong Thani's Impact Arena.

The HSBC BWF World Tour 2020 kicks back into action with the Yonex Thailand Open from Jan 12-17, followed by the Toyota Thailand Open, also a Super 1000 event, a week later from Jan 19-24.

The season will end with the HSBC BWF World Tour Finals 2020 from Jan 27-31.

The first two events offer a total purse of US$1 million each, while the 2020 season finale has a total prize fund of $1.5 million.

The list of players qualified for the World Tour Finals will be determined at the conclusion of the Jan 19-24 Toyota Thailand Open.

The top-eight players and pairs for each category in the HSBC BWF Road to Bangkok Rankings will be invited to compete in the season finale, with eligibility limited to two players or pairs per a member association.

With fans allowed into the venue under strict health and safety protocols from the second tournament onwards, Thai shuttlers are keen to use the home crowd support to their advantage.

Mixed doubles star Sapsiree Taerat- tanachai is filled with excitement ahead of her competitive return.

"I'd like to invite all Thai fans to come and cheer us. Please be our strength and encouragement," she said.

Sapsiree and her partner Dechapol Puavaranukroh are Thailand's top mixed doubles pair at world No.3, who were runners-up at the 2020 All England Open.

Kantaphon Wangcharoen, Thailand's No.1 men's singles player, said: "When I compete at home, I give more than 100 percent of myself to the match and the Thai people."

It will be the first time a country is hosting three consecutive premier tournaments.

World No.12 women's singles player Busanan Ongbamrungphan wants fans to be part of the special chapter in the nation's sporting story.

"I'd like this competition to bring happiness to Thai people. Come and make history with us," she said.

The Thai challenge will be led by world No.5 Ratchanok Intanon, the country's highest-ranked shuttler.

"Our players are excited to play at home," said Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand. "They say they will give their all to impress the home fans."

The events will feature some of the sport's biggest names including men's and women's No.1s Kento Momota of Japan and Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan.

"It is a good opportunity for Thai fans to watch the world's top players," Patama said. bwfbadminton.com/bangkok post
