Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand president Suchai Pornchaisakudom has vowed to create new stars.

Suchai, who was elected as LTAT chief late last year, told a press conference yesterday that one of his main targets was to push for tennis development.

"One of my main policies is to create players who can play on the international stage like Paradorn Srichaphan, Tamarine Tanasugarn and Danai Ucomchoke did in the past," he said.

Since the trio, who are the country's most successful players, retired several years ago, the LTAT has struggled to find new stars to replace them.

Suchai said the LTAT lacked enough sponsorship in the past but his team may be able to solve the problem.

He said the LTAT has to work with the National Olympic Committee of Thailand and both public and private sectors to reach its goal.

The LTAT will push for development at the grassroots level and organise as many as domestic and international events as possible, Suchai added.

"We will also hire world-class coaches to train players," he said, but admitted that his project would have to wait due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, top seeds Sofia Kenin and Elina Svitolina both had to save match points to make the quarter-finals of the season-opening Abu Dhabi WTA tournament on Sunday.

Kenin defeated Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 6-4, while Svitolina beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-2, 6-7 (7/5), 7-6 (10/8).
