Pathum United 13 points ahead as Port falter again

BG Pathum United further tightened their grip on the Thai League 1 trophy with a crucial 1-0 away victory over former champions Buriram United on Saturday night.

Diogo Luis Santo broke the hearts of the fans of the club where he rose to stardom on the Thai football scene with a match-winning strike for the Rabbits in the ninth minute of the clash.

It was the first time that the prolific Brazilian had returned to the Thunder Castle's home ground since leaving the club in 2018 and he was impressive again.

Diogo deftly brought down a long lob from another former Buriram star, Andres Tunez, to fire home from close range.

Buriram tested Pathum's resolve many times in the second half but the visitors held their ground until the last minute.

The only regret on the part of the Rabbits last night would be the second yellow card picked up by Santiparb Janngom for a foul on Maicon Marques during injury time.

Pathum's advantage extended to 13 points as second-placed Port drifted further back in the title race following a shock 2-0 defeat at Police Tero.

Dragan Boskovic put Police ahead in the ninth minute of the match and Arthit Boodjinda turned the game into an uphill task for Port by grabbing the second on 65 minutes.

Elsewhere last night, True Bangkok United turned in an impressive performance as they captured three points by defeating visiting Ratchaburi 2-1.

Heberty Fernandes scored the first goal for the capital side in the ninth minute before Chananan Pombupha added the second five minutes later.

The second half again belonged to the home team and Heberty came close to adding another goal to his tally for the night but his shot missed the target by a whisker.

Ratchaburi had some consolation in the 77th minute when their skipper Philip Roller narrowed the gap but his effort failed to kick-start a recovery for the visitors.

In the late game, Samut Prakan City edged hosts Rayong 1-0.
