Gama sets FA Cup goal for Buriram

Gama wants to finish in grand style

Buriram United coach Alexandre Gama wants to finish the season on a high note by winning the FA Cup.

The Thunder Castle were runners-up behind BG Pathum in the 2020-2021 Thai League 1 campaign which ended on Sunday.

Buriram beat Police Tero 2-0 in their last league match with Brazilian forward Maicon scoring both goals.

The second-placed finish was considered a success for the Brazilian coach who joined Buriram for a second spell in the mid-season after being sacked by Muang Thong United.

Gama, 53, returned to Buriram when they were in the lower half of the table and managed to lift them to second place.

He will be on a revenge mission when Buriram face Muang Thong in the FA Cup quarter-finals on Saturday.

"I am very happy with the results of my team in the league," he said.

"But our job is not over yet as we still have to play in the FA Cup. We hope to win the trophy."

The FA Cup winners, along with the Thai League 1 champions, earn direct entries to the 2022 AFC Champions League group stage.

Buriram, as league runners-up, have already been assured of a place in the 2022 ACL play-offs.

Gama is one of the most successful coaches in Thai football history.

During his first stint at Buriram from 2014-2016, he guided the northeastern side to two league titles, one FA Cup victory and one League Cup triumph.

After leaving Buriram, he steered Chiang Rai United to two FA Cup and one League Cup titles.

"I want to win trophies with every team I work for," said Gama, who failed to win a single trophy during his spell at Muang Thong.

Muang Thong, meanwhile, are now coached by their former player Mario Gjurovski.

The Kirins finished seventh in Thai League 1.
