Teenager Chanettee Wannasaen claimed a berth at the 2021 Honda LPGA Thailand after winning the qualifying event yesterday.

The 16-year-old from Chiang Mai shot a two-day total of 10-under par at Siam Country Club in Pattaya, five strokes ahead of runner-up Chonlada Chayanun.

Wassawan Sangkapong and Arpichaya Yubol were tied for third on two-under.

"It's an honour and a proud moment for me to qualify for the Honda LPGA Thailand," said Chanettee, who is also known as Pro Praw.

Chanettee, who finished second at the Phoenix Ladies Classic on Sunday behind 18-year-old Atthaya Thitikul, is one of Thailand's fast rising female golfers.

"The event gives up-and-coming players opportunities to compete alongside world-class golfers. It's an incredible experience for me to be able to take part in the tournament."

The 2021 LPGA Thailand will be held at Siam Country Club from May 6-9 after it was cancelled last year due to the Covd-19 pandemic. South Korean Amy Yang is the defending champion after her triumph in 2019.

Pitak Pruittisarikorn, Honda Automobile (Thailand) COO, said organisers want the tournament to help push Thailand's golf to international standards and provide opportunities for young Thai golfers to develop their skills.

Meanwhile, the HSBC Women's World Championship will be played from April 29-May 2 after it was wiped out last year.

No final decision has been made on the status of the LPGA Blue Bay tournament planned for China in May.

The LPGA said last month the fate of the event on China's Hainan Island, planned for May 13-16, "will be announced in the coming weeks as the LPGA continues to fully assess the situation with its partners in China."
