QB chaos adds spice to draft

You can call the upcoming NFL draft "Quarterback Chaos".

With so many ballclubs hunting for a new signal caller, as many as five QBs could be chosen consecutively with the first five picks.

Problem is, beyond the top choice -- Clemson's Trevor Lawrence expected to be plucked by the Jacksonville Jaguars -- no one is quite sure of the order in which the other four will be selected.

That quartet of QBs are Zach Wilson out of BYU, Alabama's Mac Jones, Justin Fields who toiled for Ohio State and North Dakota State's Trey Lance.

Each has his strengths but also displayed a few relatively minor faults at the collegiate level that could influence the thinking of the teams currently selecting in the two through five slots in the picking order.

Here's a look at those teams and who they might tab, assuming Lawrence is gobbled up with the first pick by the Jags.

The New York Jets, who pick second, officially gave up on Sam Darnold, their first rounder of several years ago and traded him away to the Carolina Panthers.

The guess here is they will go with a different style of QB this go-round.

The not-so-fast afoot Darnold is likely to be replaced by a more nimble type -- Fields or Lance fit this mould perfectly.

The San Francisco 49ers paid a heavy price in 2021 and future draft picks to move up to the No.3 spot.

They wouldn't have done so if they weren't intent on grabbing a new signal caller.

The Niners have apparently given up on Jimmy Garappolo, who led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance several seasons back after being acquired from the New England Patriots.

Garappolo is still under contract for another two seasons but his availability is always in doubt due to one injury after another.

So, do the Niners go for a Jimmy G play-a-like -- a classic drop back thrower like Mac Jones -- or do they, as the Jets might, go in a different direction and select a more versatile type like Zac Wilson, who still has a cannon for an arm.

The guess here is they will go for Wilson. But Wiggins' World questions Zach's terrific passing numbers compiled last season versus a less than stellar, Covid-caused, slapped-together BYU schedule.

The Cougars did not play any teams from the Big Five group of conferences (PAC 10, Big Ten, SEC, ACC and Big 12).

The guess here is that San Francisco believes Wilson passes the eye-test, though, and will select him.

Atlanta picks fourth. The Falcons have a still-functioning but ageing (36 in May) Matt Ryan.

Do they pick their QB of the future and choose another classic drop back thrower like Jones?

WW says yes -- provided they don't trade the pick to another QB-hungry team.

The Cincinnati Bengals have the fifth pick but no need at quarterback since they selected Joe Burrow with the top overall pick in last year's draft.

However, should the Bengals trade their choice to another team shopping for a new quarterback (the New England Patriots?) in return for a bunch of lower picks, who would be the next quarterback selected?

Probably Fields, if he's still available. Justin is a sensational passer-runner who functioned well in the pressure cooker at Ohio State. There are whispers, however, of a lack of total dedication to his craft. Fields has been described as a "last one into the locker room and first one out" type.

But his tremendous talent will cause some team to look past this rep and hope he grows up.

That leaves the Miami Dolphins (sixth pick) and Detroit Lions (seventh) as possible landing spots for Lance.

The Dolphins may be having second thoughts about Tua Tagovailoa and the Lions likewise may not be one hundred percent sold on Jared Goff, whom they acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in the off-season in exchange for Matthew Stafford.

If they don't trade the pick, one of the pair may scoop up Lance, a strapping (6ft 4in, 227lb) specimen and a superior athlete who compiled spectacular passing and running numbers in his one year at North Dakota State, albeit against FCS (former Division 1 AA), i.e. lesser opposition.

However, the QB cookie crumbles on April 29, "Quarterback Chaos" will make this year's NFL draft much more interesting than usual.
