Thai spikers winless after four outings

The Thai women are still looking for their first win at the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Nations League after losing 3-0 to the Netherlands yesterday.

Captain Anne Buijs scored 13 points to lead the Netherlands to a 25-20, 25-9, 25-18 victory over Thailand in their first match of the second week.

In the first week, Thailand lost to Japan, South Korea and China in the 16-team event in Rimini, Italy.

The top four teams after five weeks advance to the semi-finals.

"This match was mostly about blocking. They have a really good block-defence system, they are tall and strong, and we tried our best," said Thailand's Pleumjit Thinkaow.

"We had three days [after the first week] to recover so we could give our bodies and muscles some rest. We feel stronger now. We play against the strongest teams in the world here, so we have to learn and gain experience."

Dutch star Britt Bongaerts said: "Thailand played with a lot of combinations and a different style to what we are used to, so I think we did a good job with good serve pressure and good blocks.

"We are quite a new team with many new players. I think we are getting better, but we are not there yet."

Thailand next face Serbia today at 8pm, Thai time, and end their second-week assignment against the USA at 5pm tomorrow. All matches will be shown live by Channel 3.

The Thailand Volleyball Association (TVA) originally called up young players in an attempt to build a team for the 2024 Olympic qualifying.

Unfortunately, more than 10 players tested positive for Covid-19 at the training camp.

This forced the TVA to hastily name a new squad led by the Fab Five -- Pleumjit, Onuma Sittirak, Malika Kanthong, Nootsara Tomkom and Wilavan Apinyapong -- to compete in the VNL.
