The Professional Golf Association of Thailand (Thailand PGA) and the All Thailand Golf Tour will stage eight golf tournaments in Phuket from today to Oct 10, organisers said yesterday.

Under the Sandbox Swing project, the tournaments are aimed to help promote tourism in the province hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.

They are sponsored by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Singha Corporation and will be staged at Blue Canyon Country Club and Laguna Golf Phuket.

There will be two ATGT events -- the All Thailand Championship and the Laguna Phuket Open 2021.

The six Thailand PGA events include the Blue Canyon Championship and the Phuket Classic.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn said Phuket Sandbox, the government's pilot project to welcome fully-vaccinated foreign tourists to the resort island, has been a success.

He said the Sandbox Swing is part of the ministry's sports tourism scheme to woo foreigners to Thailand.

Deputy Phuket governor Phichet Pananong said the province has been promoting Phuket Sandbox and that organising the golf tournaments will help boost the flagging economy affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

The Sandbox Swing kicks off with the Thailand PGA One Day Tour 2021 at Blue Canyon today. The eighth and final event is the Laguna Phuket Open at Laguna Golf Phuket from Oct 7-10 which offers a total purse of three million baht.

Some of the country's leading golfers including Khanchai Tannin, Teerawat Kaewsiribandi, Panuphol Pittyarat and Poom Saksansin will participate in the Sandbox Swing.
