Ariya, Patty eager for Honda challenge

Defending champion Ariya Jutanugarn and Patty Tavatanakit will lead the local challenge at the US$1.6 million Honda LPGA Thailand, organisers said yesterday.

The 15th edition of the event will again be held at Siam Country Club in Pattaya from March 10-13.

The tournament features 70 players, including major winners Ariya, Patty, Lydia Ko, Brooke Henderson, Danille Kang, Yuka Saso, Minjee Lee and Ko Jin-Young.

Amy Yang, meanwhile, will try to win her fourth LPGA Thailand crown.

Two-time major winner Ariya won the 2021 Honda LPGA Thailand to become the country's first champion of the tournament.

"Winning the Honda LPGA Thailand 2021 was one of my greatest achievements because it was in my home country," 12-time LPGA winner Ariya told a press conference.

"I look forward to once again giving my all at the Honda LPGA Thailand 2022."

Patty, the 2021 ANA Inspiration champion, was a title contender in Pattaya last year before settling for joint-fourth place.

"I am truly excited to play in the tournament again," she said in a press release.

Other Thais in the tournament include LPGA rookie Atthaya Thitikul, who was runner-up behind Ariya last year, Moriya Jutanugarn and qualifier Chanettee Wannasaen.

Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum, Jaravee Boonchant and amateur Rina Tatematsu have received sponsors' invitations.

New Zealand's Lydia Ko said in a news release: "The last two years have been years of adapting and growing.

"I believe that I have grown a lot as a player and I want to continue doing my best and getting better at each tournament.

"I'm so happy to be a part of the Honda LPGA Thailand 2022 and can't wait for what the tournament will bring."

To ensure safety for involved parties, the Honda LPGA Thailand will be held under the government's Covid-19 protocols.

Only a limited number of spectators will be allowed at the course with no tickets on sale.

The event will be shown live by PPTV HD.

Meanwhile, Honda announced yesterday the company had extended its sponsorship deal for the tournament for another five years from 2023-2027.
