Donald could skipper Europeans in Rome

The next European Ryder Cup captain could be Luke Donald as the 44-year-old Englishman has been supported by previous captain Padraig Harrington to lead the troops out in Rome.

Lee Westwood, another English player, was reportedly the front-runner before the 48-year-old ruled himself out of the captaincy race in November.

He said: "It's almost a full-time job nowadays and that is something I can't commit to while I'm in the top 50 and still competitive. The Ryder Cup is very close to my heart and I would only take on the role if I believe I could give it 100 percent."

If Westwood is out of the equation, it would seem that Henrik Stenson would be in pole position for the role.

However, Donald has now emerged as the favourite to take up the captaincy.

The Englishman has played in the Ryder Cup on four occasions, most recently the "Miracle at Medinah" in 2012.

As a player, he has never been on the losing side and also served as a vice-captain to the two most recent skippers, Thomas Bjorn in 2018 and Harrington last year.

Meanwhile, from the Land of Down Under comes information of a 6.3 percent increase in club membership and 250,000 new golfers between 2020 and 2021.

I have to admit that I'm a wee bit sceptical of this finding, especially when one thinks of all the turmoil that Covid-19 has caused within Australia.

Perhaps the announcement was intended to lift the spirits of those who have lost their jobs but have now taken up golf!

Out of bounds: When I was young, I could hit a certain green in two and my golf shoes didn't feel like lead. They were red, and I could kick my heels over my head. Now as I'm older, I'm just happy to play the whole course through, sign my scorecard and relax over a brew.
