Thailand are in danger of going down to the Davis Cup World Group 3 after losing 2-0 to Latvia on the first day of their World Group 2 play-off tie yesterday.

In the first singles match, world No.742 Robert Strombachs defeated world No.1,302 Kasidit Samrej 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 6-4 to give Latvia a 1-0 lead over the hosts at the National Tennis Centre in Muang Thong Thani.

In the second singles, world No.324 Ernests Gulbis comfortably beat Thailand's Yuttana Charoenphon 6-4, 6-2.

"It is not yet over -- we still have three matches to play," said Thailand captain Paradorn Srichaphan, a former top-10 player in the world.

"Kasidit and Yuttana gave their all and I am satisfied with their performances."

Kasidit said he would try to win his next match.

Thai tennis chief Suchai Pornchaisakudom has promised to give the team one million baht if they get past Latvia.

Today's action begins with the doubles match between Thailand's Prachya Isaro/Thantub Suksomrarn and Gulbis/Strombachs.

Kasidit will face Gulbis and Yuttana will take on Strombachs in the reverse singles matches.

The winners of the tie will remain in World Group 2 and the losers will be relegated to World Group 3.
