Siripaporn pips Mink in all-Thai title showdown

Thailand's former world amateur champion Siripaporn "Baipat" Nuanthakhamjan yesterday shattered compatriot Nutcharut "Mink" Wongharuthai's dream of claiming a title at the ongoing international snooker events in Doha.

Siripaporn, who became the first Thai woman to claim a world snooker title in 2017, exhibited fine form during the course of the Asian women's snooker championship.

Siripaporn defeated India's Amee Kamani 3-1 (61-17, 62-59, 42-74, 72-41) to book her place in the final, while Nutcharat qualified after blanking Mongolia's Narantuya Bayarsaikhan 3-0 (74-24, 70-22, 67-39).

Nutcharat, who won the world women's professional title recently, lost to Belgium's Wendy Jans 4-1 in the final of the amateur world championship in Doha on Saturday.

She was hoping to make amends by bagging the Asian women's crown but was denied by Siripaporn, who won the clsoely contested title showdown 3-2 (36-61, 56-18, 50-61, 72-9, 67-8).

Meanwhile, Joe Perry defeated Judd Trump 9-5 in the final of the Welsh Open on Sunday.

It was Perry's first ranking win on British soil and only the second of his career, having appeared in six finals.

The Gentleman landed his first ranking title in Thailand in 2015, when he rallied from 3-0 down to beat Mark Williams 4-3 in the Players Championship final.

On that occasion there were no family were present for his moment of glory.

This time, his parents, Peter and Judy, watched on proudly from the crowd as their son lifted the Ray Reardon Trophy.

"I can't believe it. This is the absolute highlight of my career by a country mile... the best moment of my snooker career. To do it against a great champion like Judd is the icing on the cake," said the 47-year-old Englishman.

"I've said many times this week that I genuinely thought my days of winning tournaments were behind me. Whatever happens from here on, I have this to remember." agencies
