Buriram United have switched their focus to winning the Thai League 1 title this weekend after failing to reach the group stage of the AFC Champions League.

The Thunder Castle lost 3-2 on penalties at South Korea's Daegu in a play-off match on Tuesday.

The Thai League 1 leaders were just seconds from advancing to the group stage when Jonathan Bolingi gave them the lead in the 120th minute.

But the Koreans stunned the Thais moments later when Cesinha made it 1-1 to send the match into a shoot-out.

Daegu join China's Shandong, Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds and Singapore's Lion City Sailors in Group F to be held at Buriram's Chang Arena.

Buriram coach Masatada Ishii apologised to the fans for the team's failure to reach the ACL group stage.

"It's really a pity that we could not qualify for the next round," the Japanese said.

"We have to apologise to fans who cannot watch us play in Thailand."

He said his men must now try to win the Thai League 1 title.

"We must be ready for the next game in the Thai league. We must try to win the trophy," he said.

Indeed, the trophy is now for the Thunder Castle to lose as they hold a 12-point advantage with five games remaining.

They will be crowned champions if they beat second-placed Pathum United at home on Sunday. Buriram are still in contention to make a clean sweep of three domestic titles.
