Thai snooker star Noppon Saengkham defeated Robert Milkins of England 10-8 to earn a berth at the world championship on Wednesday.

Noppon, better known in his country as "Moo Paknam", top scored with breaks of 116 and 113 in the victory over the Gibraltar Open champion in the final qualifying round in Sheffield.

It's an exciting time for the Saengkham family as, back in Thailand, his wife is eight months pregnant with their first child.

"We will be having a daughter in mid-May. This is a gift for her and a gift for my family and Thai people. I am fighting for all of them," said Noppon, one of two Thai players in the draw alongside Thepchaiya Un-Nooh.

Noppon, 29, will make his third Crucible appearance, having played there in 2017 and 2020.

At the 2020 world championship, Noppon shocked 2005 world champion Shaun Murphy 10-4 in the first round in one of the biggest upsets of all time at the Crucible.

The 2022 world championship begins on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Hossein Vafaei will become the first player from Iran to compete at the Crucible, thanks to a dramatic 10-9 victory over China's Lei Peifan in the final qualifying round.

"I'm so happy I have made my people proud," said Vafaei.

"I was so nervous today, all of my body was shaking. I was eating a lot of chocolate to try to calm myself down but it wasn't working! I forgot how to hold the cue. I promise I will play better than that at the Crucible."
