Having guided the national side to the AFF Suzuki Cup title, Thailand coach Mano Polking is looking forward to winning another crown at the SEA Games in Vietnam next month.

The men's football tournament at the SEA Games is for U23 players.

Polking has been appointed coach of the U23 side in a one-off assignment to improve the country's chance of winning back the SEA Games title.

Thailand have won the title 14 times, the last in 2017. They were eliminated in the first round in 2019.

"I do know about the expectation for the Thai team at the SEA Games in Vietnam where our goal is to win the gold medal," Polking told a press conference yesterday.

However, the German-Brazilian tactician said his team may not be at full strength.

Thailand will begin their SEA Games campaign on May 7 with the final scheduled for May 22.

Although the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) has rescheduled domestic league and cup matches to help the SEA Games side, some clubs still refuse to release their players.

The tournament is not included in Fifa's international match calendar so clubs do not have the obligation to release their players for the national teams.

"We have many good players but we may not have the best ones," Polking said.

He added that if his men have motivation and passion, the team can be successful.

Team manager Nualphan Lamsam confirmed that three overseas-based players -- Benjamin Davis, Jonathan Khemdee and Chayapipat Supannapesat will join the team.

At the Vietnam event, Thailand are in Group B with Malaysia, Cambodia, Singapore and Laos.

Hosts Vietnam are the defending champions.
