Thais begin quest for Thomas & Uber Cup glory

Thailand kick off their Thomas & Uber Cup campaign on Sunday at Muang Thong Thani's Impact Arena in Nonthaburi.

The women's Uber Cup team face Egypt in their Group C opener while the men's Thomas Cup squad take on South Korea.

The Uber Cup team are led by world No.8 Ratchanok Intanon and No.10 Pornpawee Chochuwong.

Malaysia and Denmark face off in the other Group C match and champions China take on Australia in their Group B opener.

The Thai Uber Cup team are hoping to at least make it to the semi-finals. They produced their best result in 2018 when they reached the final only to lose to eventual champions Japan.

The Thai Thomas Cup team are spearheaded by Kunlavut Vitidsarn and Kantaphon Wangcharoen.

Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand, vowed to give the teams two million baht each for winning the title, one million baht for finishing second, 500,000 baht for claiming third place and 250,000 baht for reaching the quarter-finals.

This year's star-studded events feature the likes of men's world No.1 Viktor Axelsen, women's top-ranked player Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and former No.1 Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan.
