Dechapol and Sapsiree suffer upset again

Top-ranked mixed doubles duo Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai suffered a shock early exit for a second tournament in a row when they lost in the first round of the Indonesia Open on Tuesday.

The Thais were defeated 18-21, 21-7, 20-22 by unseeded Malaysians Goh Soon Huat and Lai Shevon Jemie in the BWF World Tour Super 1000 event at Istora Stadium in Jakarta.

Last week, Dechapol and Sapsiree were eliminated in the first round of the Indonesia Masters at the same venue.

Elsewhere yesterday, Thailand's Busanan Ongbamrungphan defeated China's Han Yue 21-15, 12-21, 22-20 in the first round of the women's singles.

Top seed Akane Yamaguchi from Japan beat Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 21-15, 21-18.

Unseeded Chinese He Bingjiao upset seventh seed PV Sindhu of India 21-14, 21-18.

Fifth seed Carolina Marin of Spain finished off Julie Dawall Jakobsen of Denmark 21-17, 21-17.

In the women's doubles, Thailand's seventh seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai beat Rachel Honderich and Kristen Tsai of Canada 21-18, 16-21, 21-12.

In the men's singles, sixth seed Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia defeated Thailand's Sitthikom Thammasin 21-15, 21-14.

In today's action, Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, who was runner-up at last week's Indonesia Masters, faces compatriot Pornpawee Chochuwong in the women's singles first round.

Yonex supports BAT

Patama Leeswadtrakul, president of the Badminton Association of Thailand (BAT), signed a new deal with sports equipment manufacturer Yonex on Tuesday.

Khunying Patama said she would like to thank the Japanese company for its support in the BAT's player development.

"This co-operation will help bring further success to Thai badminton," she said after the contract signing ceremony in Tokyo.

"Yonex has been part of in the BAT's success since I became the association president."

She labelled the company as a "true friend" of the BAT.
