Media meets in desperate need of a fresh look

Listening to pre-tournament player interviews, especially during this week's US Open, has always been cringeworthy to me.

The same supposedly smart and witty cliche answers to pitched mundane questions is hardly riveting TV.

The qualifications of several of those allowed to ask questions should perhaps be re-evaluated as no one, with a normal portion of brain cells, is interested in players' favourite food or which football team they support.

The dislike expressed by the players for having to play in a sponsor's pre-tournament pro-am is well known, as is having to present themselves in the interview area.

The body language and one-word answers are clear indicators that they would rather be somewhere else.

The only people who seem excited about these press extravagances are those who organise them.

Surely tournament hosts and sponsors could come up with something slightly different after all these years of the same questions and answers.

There's no doubt room is available for new innovative like talking to a player and their coach while they are both working on the range.

This way the viewer would be able gain a close look at swing mechanics and movements whilst understanding what coach and player are trying to achieve before heading to the course.

Picking the brains of a player leading up to his first tee shot might be interesting to investigate.

Talking and asking questions to a player during rounds could also be explored.

Querying a player as to what went wrong after a particular bad round is daunting for anybody to have to carry out, but this exercise is just as insightful in gaining a player's character, as would interviewing a player who just shot a 65.

Out of Bounds: A genuine smile on a golf course is rare. Some smiles are sarcastic, suspicious or false -- all though contain little satisfaction. A genuine smile on the links only appears after a long putt was holed or after an opponent's bad shot.
