The Italian women's team won their maiden Volleyball Nations League title after defeating Brazil 3-0 in the final in Ankara on Sunday.

The reigning European champions hammered out a 25-23, 25-22, 25-22 victory over Brazil and left the South Americans with a third consecutive VNL silver medal.

Earlier on Sunday, Serbia made their first-ever VNL podium after winning the bronze medal match, also in straight sets.

The reigning world champions bounced back from their semi-final loss to Brazil on Saturday and claimed a hard-fought 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 26-24) victory over hosts Turkey.

Italian opposite Paola Egonu once again led her team as the best scorer of the final match. This time she tallied 21 points, including three blocks.

Outside hitter Caterina Bosetti added another 11.

Opposite Kisy Nascimento was Brazil's best scorer with 14 points, followed by captain Gabriela Guimaraes who made 11.

A five-point run, including three kills by Egonu and a block by middle Cristina Chirichella, helped Italy open an early 10-3 lead in the first set.

The Brazilians then gave their European opponents a huge scare but their efforts fell just short as Italy won 25-23.

The second and third sets were close encounters as the Italians triumphed 25-22, 25-22.

"I'm really happy! We did it as a group. We still have a long way to go, but we are happy with this great result. All of my teammates were great and the staff had a well-prepared technical plan, which worked out really well." said Italy setter Alessia Orro.

Meanwhile, Thailand, under coach Danai Sriwatcharamethakul, reached the VNL finals for the first time, losing to Turkey in the quarter-finals.

They ended the preliminary round with five wins and seven losses.

The Thais beat Bulgaria, Serbia, China, Canada and South Korea, and were defeated by Belgium, Poland, Japan, the USA, the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Italy.

Their outstanding players included captain Pornpun Guedpard, the best setter of the preliminary phase, Chatchu-on Moksri, Ajcharaporn Kongyot, Pimpichaya Kokram, Piyanut Pannoy and Hattaya Bamrungsuk.

Thailand's next major tournament is the world championship in September.
