National cyclist Jai Angsuthasawit broke his own national record in the qualifying round of the men's individual sprint 200m time trial at the Track Asia Cup international cycling tournament at the velodrome of Suphanburi Sports School on Saturday.

The tournament marked the 62nd anniversary of the Thai Cycling Association.

Jai, who claimed the keirin gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games, won the qualifying round with a time of 10.331sec, breaking his own national record of 10.376sec set in the national championships on Aug 13.

However after the race, Jai had abnormally fast heartbeat and after a checkup with the team's medical staff it was decided to pull him out of the semi-final round.

"We received the information from the medical team that Jai is suffering from a heat stroke which has resulted in an abnormally fast heartbeat," said Thai cycling chief Gen Decha Hemkrasi yesterday.

"We then decided that he should pull out of the competition despite the fact that Jai had just broken his own national record.

"If he had continued, Jai would have qualified for the final and had a great chance to win the gold medal.

"However, I made the decision that it would not be good for him to continue with the race."

Jai will compete in the world championships in France in October.

In the 4km team pursuit, the Thai national youth team won with a time of 4.56.495min.

The competitions continues today with the first race of the starting at 8am at the same venue.
