Former Thai League 1 champions BG Pathum United were denied a dream start to their campaign for this year's trophy as they suffered a 1-0 loss in their first match of the domestic season at Chonburi last night.

A lone goal from Danilo Alves midway through the first half proved enough to ensure three points for the Sharks.

Pathum dominated the midfield and enjoyed most of the possession in the first half but their inability to make inroads did not allow them the opportunity to fire any shot on target.

The trend continued in the second half with hosts Chonburi happy to sit deep and concentrate more on thwarting the visitors' move.

Pathum United did have a couple of shots at Chonburi's goal but they failed to produce the leveller they were seeking.

Chonburi surged to fifth spot in the table with six points, while Pathum are yet to open their account in the top flight, sharing the bottom spot with Police Tero and Nongbua Pitchaya.

The Rabbits' start was delayed as they participated in the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League in Japan, where they lost in the quarter-finals to Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0 of the host country on Aug 22.

The Rabbits will next face defending champions and leaders Buriram United on Sunday night.

Chonburi have a relatively easier fixture on the same night, taking on newcomers Lamphun Warriors in an away game.

The Thai League 1 action will resume tomorrow night when winless Nongbua Pitchaya host Ratchaburi, who are tied with with Bangkok United, Buriram United and Chiang Rai United at the top with all of them having nine points each.
