Ratchanok Intanon and Supanida Katethong advanced to the women's singles last 16 round of the US$750,000 BWF Japan Open in Osaka yesterday.

Mixed doubles stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai and men's doubles duo Supak Jomkoh and Kittinupong Kedren also progressed at Maruzen Intec Arena Osaka.

Eighth seed Ratchanok defeated Thai compatriot Busanan Ongbamrungphan 22-20, 21-17 in the first round. She will next play China's Han Yue, who defeated Kirsty Gilmour of Scotland 21-17, 21-14.

Unseeded Supanida battled past Yeo Jia Min of Singapore 11-21, 21-6, 23-21 to set up a meeting with Korean third seed An Se-Young. However another women's singles hope Phittayaporn Chaiwan failed to progress, losing to Korean Kim Ga-Eun 21-15, 21-11.

Second seeds Dechapol and Sapsiree defeated Kim Won-Ho and Jeong Na-Eun of South Korea 21-16, 21-19 while Supak and Kittinupong came through their opener with a 21-19, 21-15 win over Goh V Shem and Lim Khim Wah of Malaysia.

Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who was a finalist at the World Championships in Tokyo on Sunday, had a walkover win against Antony Ginting of Indonesia. He will play fellow Thai Kantaphon Wangcharoen today.

Women's doubles seventh seeds Jongkolphan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai and the pair of Supissara Paewsampran and Puttita Supajirakul both advanced.

However Benyapa Aimsaard and Nuntakarn Aimsaard bowed out after losing to Du Yue and Li Wenmei of China 11-21, 21-15, 21-16.

Women's seeded stars all moved safely through yesterday including Japanese top seed Akane Yamaguchi, who claimed her second successive world title on Sunday, second seed Tai Tzu-ying of Taiwan, fourth seed Chen Yufei of China and fifth seed Carolina Marin of Spain.

On the men's side, third seed Anders Antonsen of Denmark downed Toma Junior Popov of France, seventh seed Jonathan Christie of Indonesia edged Holland's Mark Caljouw of Netherlands 21-13, 22-24, 21-10 and Srikanth Kidambi of India knocked out fifth seed Lee Zii Jia of Malaysia 22-20, 23-21.
