An uneasy face-off in the making

The Sept 8-11 BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth reminds me of my input and association with its acquisition back several years ago.

Europe's flagship event has been played at Wentworth in England for many years and I suspect this is the case because the club is also the DP World Tour (formerly the European Tour) headquarters.

In a few days, players who have committed to LIV Golf are scheduled to contend on the famous Burma Road course alongside Rory McIlroy and others who have been outspoken on the LIV-PGA Tour conflict, including defending champion Billy Horschel.

It is a situation almost guaranteed to provoke black and white conflict with no sign of a single shade of gray in between.

Already the LIV players have been told that they will not be required to play in the Wednesday pro-am and will not be in TV featured groups, which will be interesting and perhaps a wee bit complicated if one of the LIV players is leading by a few strokes.

A memo was also sent to the LIV members saying: "Out of respect for our partners, our broadcasters and your fellow competitors, we would kindly ask you to consider not wearing LIV Golf-branded apparel during your participation at Wentworth."

The harsh reality is that past Ryder Cup longtime stalwarts of Europe like Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, Henrik Stenson, Martin Kaymer and Sergio Garcia, together with "Captain America" Patrick Reed, are suddenly far from welcome in what used to be their home from home.

Out of bounds: McIlroy summed up the uncomfortable situation by saying: "It's going to be hard for me to stomach going to Wentworth in a couple of weeks' time and seeing 18 of them there -- I hate it. I really do."
