Haaland joins hat-trick club

The Premier League seldom fails to entertain and last week was no exception highlighted by three-hat-tricks.

You could argue that scoring a hat-trick is not that exceptional and indeed since the Premier League started in 1992 more than 200 players have notched three goals in a game.

However, last week's efforts were particularly noteworthy.

Kicking things off on Saturday, Brighton's Belgian striker Leandro Trossard had the nerve to score a brilliant hat-trick at Liverpool, a rare feat for any visiting player at Anfield.

Trossard's efforts earned the Seagulls a well-deserved 3-3 draw and saw them claim an unlikely fourth place the table.

Unfortunately for Trossard, his achievement was overshadowed the next day courtesy of Erling Haaland who scored his third consecutive home hat-trick for Manchester City in their 6-3 hammering of Manchester United.

In fact, there were two City hat-tricks with Phil Foden joining in the fun, bagging three for the first time.

United were flattened by the scoreline which had stood at 6-1 up to the 84th minute until they grabbed two late goals after Pep Guardiola made a host of substitutions.

Haaland is an astonishing player and even better than the City fans could possibly have envisaged.

The big Norwegian seems to be able to brush off defenders at will and his finishing is lethal.

In the league, he has scored 14 goals in just eight games while overall he has netted 19 times in 12 matches for City.

He added another couple midweek against Copenhagen in the Champions League and only played in the first half.

He looks to be on track to break a host of records.

There have even been whispers that Haaland could get close to the great Dixie Dean's record of 60 goals for Everton in 39 games in the 1927-28 season.

More importantly for City is the understanding that Haaland has built up with Kevin De Bruyne and Foden which is likely to scare the daylights out of even their biggest rivals.

Haaland, Foden and Trossard are the latest in the long line of hat-trick heroes in the Premier League which features many familiar names.

The first player to notch a Premier League hat-trick was Eric Cantona playing for Leeds United when they thrashed Tottenham Hotspur 5-0 in August 1992.

Five players have scored five goals in a Premier League match and it is a line-up worthy of a Hall of Fame -- Andy Cole (Man U v Ipswich), Alan Shearer (Newcastle v Sheff Wed), Jermain Defoe (Spurs v Wigan), Dimitar Berbatov (Man U v Blackburn ) and Sergio Aguero (Man City v Newcastle).

Aguero also tops the number of hat-tricks with 12, followed by Shearer on 11 and Robbie Fowler on nine.

The record for the shortest time in which a hat-trick has been completed is held by Sadio Mane in his Southampton days when in May, 2015 he banged in three against Aston Villa in two minutes and 56 seconds. Now that takes some doing.

It would be remiss not to mention a certain Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who in February 1999 came on as a sub in the 71st minute for Man U against Nottingham Forest and scored four goals in the last 12 minutes, cementing his reputation as a super-sub.

On a personal note, I will never forget the first time I was at a stadium to witness a hat-trick in the top flight.

It was Aug 27, 1960 at Stamford Bridge and Chelsea were hosting Wolves who at that time were arguably the best team in England.

The match ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw. Greaves, aged 20, scored a sublime hat-trick for the Blues and I was won over.

Greaves became my idol and Chelsea my top flight team, although I still supported my home town club of Reading down in the then-Third Division where we didn't see too many hat-tricks.

Less than a year later, on April 1961, I was fortunate enough to be at Wembley to see Greaves score another hat-trick when England beat Scotland 9-3.

There will plenty more hat-tricks to savour in the Premier League this season and one suspects a certain Norwegian might have a say in some of them.
