Goalkeeper Worawut Sukuna of Thai League 1 side Chonburi FC seemed to have a bright future when he got the chance to play for the Sharks in place of injured first-choice custodian Chanin Sae-ear.
He has played six games for the high-flying Sharks, who are currently third in the top flight.
During the spell, he conceded only four goals, with two clean sheet.
Unfortunately, his future is now uncertain after he was charged with drunk driving following an accident in Chon Buri in which a pedestrian was killed and another seriously injured early yesterday morning.
Chonburi FC's facebook page was flooded with posts criticising the club and the player with harsh words.
Although the 23-year-old goalkeeper has been suspended by the Sharks who said they would not terminate his contract, it is doubtful if he will ever play again.
"If you drink, you should not drive," said Chonburi team manager Sasis Singtothong.
There have been widespread calls for the team to terminate his contract but Sasis said he wants to give Worawut another chance.
"He is still young. If we terminate his contract, it would be tantamount to ending his future [in football]."
Sasis admitted that some clubs in other countries may chose to terminate their contracts with players in such a case but Chonburi have their own rules.
He said he would not protect Worawut and that the club would cooperate with the law enforcers.
Worawut, of Maha Sarakham, is a product of Chonburi Football Academy.
He was called up to Thailand's initial squad for the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup but failed to make the cut.
Chonburi are scheduled to host Sukhothai for a Thai League 1 game on Saturday.
