Newly-appointed BG Pathum United coach Matt Smith aims to turn the Rabbits into Thai League 1 title contenders every season.

The Australian, who played for BG from 2015–2018, was named coach of the club after Makoto Teguramori was sacked last week.

"My goal now is to make the team a title contender every season," Smith told reporters yesterday.

"I want to see the players keep developing. We must have enthusiasm to win, and that is my target."

However, he admitted that it could be difficult for the Rabbits to challenge for the league title this term.

After 11 games, BG are seventh on 18 points, nine behind leaders Buriram United.

"We have a lot of good Thai and foreign players. We aim to become champions but if you look at the table now, we have a lot of work to do," Smith said.

"Optimistically, we still have many games to play and have time to plan for the second leg [of the season]."

Pathum, last season's runners-up, will next meet Nakhon Ratchasima on Saturday.

Smith said he was happy and proud to be back at the club.

"It's really a great feeling to be here once again. The club has grown a lot since I left. I can still remember the atmosphere in the stadium," he said.

He said the Rabbits contacted him and made an offer he could not turn down.

"It's easy to make decision," said Smith who managed Brisbane City before joining BG.

He said the first assignment is for him to make the players understand his playing system.
