Thailand's Kunlavut runs rings around Loh again

Thailand's Kunlavut Vitidsarn defeated Singapore's Loh Kean Yew again in the quarter-finals of the India Open yesterday.

The eighth seed Thai sealed a 21-12, 21-17 victory over the third-seeded opponent in the men's singles contest in the Super 750 tournament in New Delhi.

The 21-year-old from Chon Buri also beat the 2021 world champion in the same round in Kuala Lumpur last week.

Kunlavut, who was runner-up at the 2022 world championships, now has a 4-1 head-to-head record against Loh.

The Thai will face sixth seed Anthony Ginting of Indonesia in the semi-finals today.

Ginting defeated China's Li Shifeng 21-11, 17-21, 21-18 in the quarter-finals. He is chasing his first Super 750/1000 title since the 2018 China Open.

"I really, really want to be a champion," he said. "Every player wants to be champion in every tournament but it is not easy to get it. So that's why I try so hard to keep focus."

But the title is still some way off yet, given that Denmark's Viktor Axelsen, who has swept up nearly everything in his path over the last two years, is still in the draw.

Axelsen reached the semi-finals after compatriot Rasum Gemke retired when Axelsen was leading 16-8 in the first game.

In the women's singles, Thailand's Supanida Katethong advanced to the semi-finals without sweat thanks to Chinese Chen Yufei's withdrawal.

Second seed An Se-Young from South Korea finished off Thailand's eighth seed Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-14, 21-14. Top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan defeated Spain's Carolina Marin 21-17, 14-21, 21-9.
