Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu of Canada marched into the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open in Hua Hin yesterday.

The Canadian top seed defeated Russia's Anastasia Zakharova 6-2, 7-5 in the last 16 round yesterday.

She will play fifth seed Marta Kostyuk for a place in the semi-finals of the WTA International Series event at True Arena Hua Hin Sport Club.

Earlier, Kostyuk of Ukraine secured her last-eight spot with a 6-3, 7-6 (9/7) victory over Nao Hibino of Japan.

German sixth seed Tatjana Maria also progressed after she knocked out the 2019 Thailand Open champion Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine 6-0, 6-4.

Maria will play Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in the quarter-finals.

Tsurenko upset fourth seed Anna Kalinskaya of Russia 6-0, 6-7 (3/7), 6-4 in the last 16 on Wednesday night.

Briton Heather Watson also moved into the quarter-finals after she edged past Han Na-Lae of South Korea 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 in a marathon that lasted two hours and 34 minutes.

Watson will face China's Wang Xinyu in the quarter-finals today.

In a late match on Wednesday night, Slovenia's Tamara Zidansek defeated eighth seed Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Zidansek will face Chinese world No.54 Lin Zhu in the quarter-finals.

In the doubles event yesterday, Thai pair Laksika Kumkhum and Peangtarn Plipuech moved into the semi-finals after they had a walkover win against Linda Fruhvirtova of the Czech Republic and Anna Kalinskaya of Russia.

Davis Cup clash

Thailand's Davis Cup team will take on Romania in the Davis Cup World Group I play-offs today at the National Tennis Development Centre, Muang Thong Thani.

Thailand's No.2 player Yutthana Charoenphon has been drawn to play Nicolas David Ionel in the opening singles match and No.1 Kasidit Samrej will face Filip Cristian Jianu in the second match.

Pruchya Isaro and Thantub Suksumrarn will play Marius Copil and Victor Vlad Cornea in the doubles tie tomorrow, followed by the fourth rubber between Kasidit and Ionel.

Yutthana will take on Jianu in the fifth match.
