The Football Association of Thailand (FAT) yesterday thanked Miyo Okamoto for her two-year stint as national team coach.

The Japanese, whose contract expired, arrived in Thailand in January 2021 thanks to the cooperation between the FAT and the Japan Football Association (JFA).

Her tenure with Thailand was largely unsuccessful as the Chaba Kaew's bid for a third consecutive World Cup berth ended when they lost to Cameroon in a play-off last month.

However, FAT president Somyot Poompunmuang praised Okamoto for pushing for development and laying a foundation for the team.

"We would like to thank the JFA for sending Okamoto to Thailand," Somyot said.

"Okamoto helped lift the standards of Thai football and created a system for the Thai women's football team.

"She selected players from many football clubs. She gave chances to many new players to play for the national team.

"I believe Thai coaches and players gained a lot from her spell. We hope to work together again in the future."

Naruepol Kaenson will be interim coach of both the senior and U20 national teams.

The Chaba Kaew will next play in the 2024 Olympic qualifying round in Chon Buri next month and then the SEA Games in Cambodia in May.

The U20 side will take part in the first round of the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup qualifying from March 8-12 in Buri Ram.

Meanwhile, reports said Okamoto is a candidate to become coach of the Japanese team in the future.

Japan are one of the top teams in women's football. They won the World Cup in 2011 and were runners-up at the 2012 Olympics in London.
