Wattana and O'Sullivan seal 6-red last-16 places

Local favourite Wattana Phu-Ob-Orm and seven-time world snooker champion Ronnie O'Sullivan secured places in the last 16 of the Pathum Thani 6-red World Championship on Wednesday.

The duo were assured of the top-two finishes in Group H and berths in the knockout stages after wins in early sessions at the Convention Centre of Thammasat University's Rangsit campus in Pathum Thani on Wednesday.

O'Sullivan defeated fellow Englishman Stan Moody 5-2 while Wattana, known on the international stage as James Wattana, edged past Jimmy Robertson, another English player, 5-4.

The victories followed their opening wins on Tuesday night in the 11-million-baht tournament. O'Sullivan arrived in Thailand on Tuesday just hours before his first match.

England's Judd Trump sealed a 5-4 win over China's Ma Hailong to finish top of Group D with a 3-0 record.

Ricky Walden beat Thailand's Kritsanut Lertsattayathorn 5-4 to join compatriot Trump in the last-16 round.

Thailand's Thepchaiya Un-nooh finished off China's Zhou Yuelong 5-2 to advance with three wins in Group B.

England's Tom Ford was second in the group.

Wales' Mark Williams defeated Andres Petrov of Estonia 5-2 to reached the last 16 as runner-up in Group F behind England's Joe Perry.

In Group G, England's Stuart Bingham defeated Thailand's Noppon Saengkham 5-1.

Bingham (3-0) and Noppon (2-1) had already progressed to the next round after two wins in their opening matches.

Other players who qualified for the knockout stages include Chinese stars Zhang Anda and Ding Junhui, Scotland's John Higgins, Iran's Hossein Vafaei and Englishman Chris Wakelin.

The last-16 and quarter-final rounds are scheduled for Thursday.

The semi-finals will take place tomorrow and the final on Saturday.

The champion will receive 42 million baht in prize money and the trophy graciously donated by His Majesty the King.
