Thailand trounce Canada to claim first VNL victory

Thailand defeated Canada 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-21) for their first win of the FIVB Women's Nations League 2023 in Antalya, Turkey, yesterday.

The team, coached by Danai Sriwacharamaytakul, lost their opening match against defending champions Italy 3-2 in Pool 1 on Tuesday.

Wipawee Srithong was the highest scorer for Thailand with 18 points while Chatchu-on Moksri chipped in 17 points.

Wipawee replaced Ajcharaporn Kongkot, who injured her leg during the match against Italy.

Alexa Gray and Layne Van Buskirk scored 10 points each for the Canadians.

"We made some changes in the line-up on Friday and the new players were able to help out the team so we could pick up our first win today," said Pimpichaya Kokram during an on-court interview.

Thailand will play Poland in the third pool match today. It will be shown live on Channel 7 at 6pm.

Canada, who are still winless after two matches, will take on South Korea, who lost to hosts Turkey 3-0 on Wednesday.

In Pool 2 action in Nagoya, Japan, Germany beat Croatia 3-0, Dominican Republic edged Bulgaria 3-2 and Brazil blanked the Netherlands 3-0 on Thursday.
