Thailand will face Japan in the penultimate Pool 6 match of the Volleyball Nations League 2023 at Hua Mark Indoor Stadium today.

Thailand, who suffered a 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-20) defeat against Turkey on Thursday, are still looking for their first win in the final week of the preliminary phase.

The match against Japan begins at 8.30pm and will be shown live on Channel 7.

The Thai team only have two wins so far in the 2023 campaign, all coming from the first week of the tournament in Antalya, Turkey.

The loss against Turkey -- their eighth of the tournament -- ended Thailand's hopes of making it to the VNL Finals in Arlington, United States, in two weeks.

With the victory, the Turkish team moved up to third place in the 16-team standings with seven wins (23 points) and are guaranteed a berth in the finals.

Outside hitter Derya Cebecioglu had her best performance in the VNL 2023, leading the Turkish victory with 13 points -- 12 kills and one block.

Middle blocker Thatdao Nuekjang was Thailand's top scorer with nine points.

The preliminary phase features three weeks of competition, with each of the 16 teams playing 12 matches.

The top-eight teams after the prelim- inary round qualify for the final phase between July 12-16.

The Americans are already guaranteed a spot.

Thailand made history last year when they entered the top-eight tournament for the first time.
