Dechapol, Sapsiree battle to reach semis

Mixed doubles stars Dechapol Puavaranukroh and Sapsiree Taerattanachai booked their berth in the semi-finals of the US$420,000 BWF Korea Open in Yeosu yesterday.

The Thai second seeds fought back to defeat sixth seeds Seo Seung-Jae and Chae Yu-Jung of South Korea 18-21, 21-14, 21-19.

They will play fourth seeds Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping of China in the last four of the World Tour Super 500 event today.

Feng and Huang defeated Hiroki Midorikawa and Natsu Saito of Japan 21-10, 21-15.

Dechapol and Sapsiree are chasing their second title of the year. They won the Malaysia Masters -- a World Tour Super 500 event -- in May.

In the women's singles event, top four players -- Akane Yamaguchi, An Se-Young, Chen Yufei and Tai Tzu-ying -- all progressed to the semi-finals.

Japan's top seed Yamaguchi survived yet another scare, needing three games to overcome Kim Ga-Eung of South Korea 21-17, 19-21, 21-12; South Korea's second seed An eased past compatriot Sim Yu-Jin 21-7, 21-6; China's third seed Chen scraped past Wang Zhiyi, the eighth seed, 10-21, 25-23, 21-12 and fourth seed Tai of Taiwan downed China's Zhang Yiman 21-17, 21-15.

Yamaguchi will play Tai while Olympic champion Chen will take on An in today's semi-finals.

In the men's singles event, top seed Kodai Naraoka of Japan beat Lee Cheuk Yiu of Hong Kong 21-17, 21-18; fourth seed Loh Kean Yew of Singapore defeated Ng Tze Yong of Malaysia 22-20, 21-19; third seed Shi Yuqi of China defeated compatriot Lu Guangzu 21-7, 13-21, 21-18 and Denmark's Anders Antonsen downed sixth seed Kenta Nishimoto of Japan 21-11, 10-21, 21-18.

In the semis, Naraoka will play Loh while Shi will take on Antonsen.
