Treble winners Buriram United and Bangkok United are confident of lifting the trophy when they face off in the Thailand Champions Cup today.

The curtain-raising match to the new season kicks off at 6pm at Rajamangala National Stadium.

In the mould of England's Community Shield, the Thailand Champions Cup normally pits the Thai League 1 champions against the FA Cup winners.

Since Buriram swept all three trophies, T1 and FA Cup runners-up Bangkok United were chosen to meet the Thunder Castle in the traditional match.

Bangkok United will seek revenge against Buriram who comfortably defeated the capital side 2-0 in the FA Cup final.

"We are ready for the match and every player is eager to play," Bangkok United team manager Suradej Anantapong told a press conference yesterday.

"We know it is not easy to play against Buriram but we are ready to play and win the match. We want to win this match to begin the league season with confidence."

The Angels are led by Brazilians Everton, Willen Mota and Vander Luiz and Thailand midfielder Thitiphan Puangchan.

Bangkok United have been relatively quiet in the transfer market.

Coach Totchtawan Sripan's men lost 4-1 to Muang Thong United in their last warm-up game last week.

Buriram director Samaporn Polbutr said: "Last season, we won three trophies and we hope to begin the new season with this trophy."

The Thunder Castle thrashed Khon Kaen United 4-1 in a friendly match last week with Thailand forward Supachai Chaided scoring twice and Guinea's Lonsana Doumbouya adding another.

Buriram will start favourites against Bangkok United.

In their previous 28 meetings, Buriram won 20, drew four and lost four matches.

Buriram coach Masatada Ishii has faced Totchtawan seven times, winning five and losing two matches.

Buriram begin the defence of their T1 title at Khon Kaen United next Saturday, when Bangkok United travel to newcomers Uthai Thani.

The 2023-24 season starts next Friday when Nakhon Ratchasima host Port.
