More than 300 athletes from 11 nations are participating in the Track Asia Cup 2023, which starts on Saturday in Suphan Buri, the Thai Cycling Association (TCA) said on Friday.

The event is being held until Aug 30 at Suphan Buri Sports School, said TCA president Gen Decha Hemkrasri.

The tournament is sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and offers qualifying points for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

There are 15 teams from 11 nations from Asia and Europe taking part in the tournament including Malaysia, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, India, Latvia, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, South Korea, China and Iran.

Decha said Thai cyclists are ready for the tournament after training two months in China.

The Thai athletes are Pannarai Rasri, Kanyarat Norkaew, Nattaporn Apimote and Yaovaret Jitmart in the women's event, and Tack Kaewnoi, Wachiravi Sankumwong, Jaturong Nitwanti and Yuttana Mano in the men's category.

"We sent our cyclists to train in China because the Asian Games are going to take place in Hangzhou, China, from Sept 23 to Oct 8," Decha said.

"China will use a velodrome of 250 metres while the main one in Thailand is 333.33 metres. So we sent them to train there to get used to the track."

He added that the UCI approved the Track Asia Cup 2023 in Thailand because the country has hosted a number of successful events.

Suphan Buri governor Nattapat Suwannaprateep will preside over Saturday's opening ceremony.
